ES6 and why it is the most important update

What ES6 is

ES6 (ECMAScript 2015) is the version of the standard approved in June 2015, which fundamentally changed the language. Before it, JavaScript had not received a major update for almost 15 years (since ES5 in 2009). ES6 became the turning point after which JS turned from a "browser language" into a full-fledged modern programming language.

Why ES6 is the most important update

1. New syntax closer to modern languages

ES6 added many constructs that made the code clearer, shorter and safer:

FeatureWhat it doesExample
let / constBlock scope (instead of var)let x = 10; const y = 20;
Arrow functionsCompact syntax, preserves thisarr.map(x => x * 2)
Template literalsConvenient interpolationHello, ${name}!
DestructuringSimple data extractionconst {name, age} = user;
Spread / RestFlexible combining and splittingconst all = [...arr1, ...arr2]
ClassesSyntactic sugar over prototypesclass User { constructor(name) {...} }

2. Modules (import / export)

Before ES6, JS had no standardized modules, so people had to use:

  • IIFEs (self-invoking functions),
  • or external systems like CommonJS (Node.js), AMD, RequireJS.

ES6 introduced an official module system for the first time:

javascript
// math.js export const sum = (a, b) => a + b; // main.js import { sum } from './math.js';

This became the foundation for modern tools: Webpack, Rollup, Vite, Parcel, Next.js and so on.

3. Promise - asynchrony without callback hell

Before ES6, asynchronous code looked terrible ("callback hell"):

javascript
getData(function (res) { process(res, function (result) { save(result, function () { console.log('Done'); }); }); });

ES6 brought Promise - linear, readable code:

javascript
getData() .then(process) .then(save) .then(() => console.log('Done'));

Later (in ES2017), async/await was built on top of it.

4. Extended object and array capabilities

  • Improved object literals (shorthands, computed keys).
  • New methods:
    • Array.from(), Array.of(),
    • Object.assign(),
    • Map, Set, WeakMap, WeakSet.
javascript
const obj = { a: 1, b: 2 }; const copy = Object.assign({}, obj);

5. Symbols, iterators and generators

This is a level below - the language's mechanics:

  • Symbol is a new primitive data type.
  • Iterator and Generator are the foundation for for...of, async/await, yield.
javascript
function* counter() { yield 1; yield 2; yield 3; } for (const num of counter()) console.log(num);

6. Unifying JS across the browser and the server

ES6 made the language universal:

  • Node.js, browsers and frontend frameworks now "speak the same language".
  • Standardized bundlers, transpilers (Babel) and frameworks (React, Vue, Angular) appeared.

Summary - why ES6 is key

ReasonIn short
New, modern syntaxMade JS convenient and safe
ModulesBrought order to project structure
Asynchrony via PromiseRemoved callback hell
New data structuresImproved efficiency
Unified environmentJS became a serious language on both the front end and the back end

In simpler terms:

Before ES6, JavaScript was a "browser toy", after ES6, it is a modern, powerful and mature language standing alongside Python, Java and C#.
